DISTINGUISHED SERVICE NOMINEES:

JEFF BENZIGER Jeff Benziger has worked for the Ceres Courier for 38 years. Since the Courier started in 1910, he has worked there for 33 percent of the time it has been in operation. If you don't know who Jeff is you must be from out of town or live under a rock. He is the Editor of our local newspaper and attends many of our community events. He has produced thousands of stories and has been on the front lines for many historical milestones. From the darkest days to the proudest moments of Ceres, he has seen it, lived it and reported on it. Whether you agree or disagree with Jeff on his editorials, he says it as he sees it and has no problem giving you his opinion. Jeff also has a sharp memory when it comes to history. He and Sara, produce a YouTube show called "History Hunters." Where they travel to different locations to discuss a historical event, person or town. If you get an opportunity to speak to him about his show, you will learn a lot., Jeff knows more about Ceres than many people who live here. He has even wrote a book in the "Images of America: California Series, Ceres" about our little city. His book depicts what it was like for our Ceres Founder Daniel Whitmore to move, live and build the City of Ceres. In the Ceres Courier, he often includes articles about past citizens, homes or neighborhoods in Ceres. It is so interesting how he can remember who the founding families were and who was related to who, what businesses were built in the early years, etc. He is literally a walking, breathing history book about the City of Ceres. The definition for Distinguished Service Award for a Citizen states "an honor presented in recognition of outstanding civic service, exceptional contributions to the community and actions that go above and beyond normal responsibilities." Jeff has reported and been the eyes and ears for our community for so many years, that his civic service, exceptional contributions and actions beyond normal responsibilites have many times been overlooked because he has been present for our community for 38 years. For many of those years, citizens used the Ceres Courier to get their local news and information about what was happening around town. Although, news stories have gone mostly digital now, he still keeps up by posting the Courier on Social Media. He still attends fundraisers, school events, chamber events, community events, city events and much more to get the story out to the citizens of Ceres. He truly has provided distinguished service to our city and community for many, many years.
MFH TATTOO STUDIO - YESENIA MARTINEZ & FELIPE MARTINEZ They are actively involved in community events year-round—including the Christmas Parade, Halloween celebrations, the City Night Market, and numerous other city-hosted gatherings. In addition to their public service, they contribute to the local economy as small-business owners of a tattoo studio that brings joy, creativity, and connection to the community. Their presence enriches Ceres both culturally and economically, making them invaluable members of the city they proudly serve. This remarkable pair has shown what it truly means to lead with heart, culture, and community spirit. Together, they brought their community, families, skills, and vision together to create an unforgettable Día de Los Muertos celebration in Ceres, CA—an event that not only honored tradition but strengthened the bonds within the community. Through months of planning, collaboration, and hands-on dedication, they transformed their shared passion for heritage into a vibrant cultural experience for all ages. Their event celebrated ancestral remembrance through art, music, education, and authentic tradition, offering a welcoming space where families could connect, learn, and participate. By engaging local organizations, supporting small vendors, and activating volunteers, they created a celebration that was both meaningful and accessible. Their leadership extended far beyond event logistics. They modeled what community stewardship looks like—lifting others up, preserving cultural heritage, and making space for diversity and unity. Their work brought pride to Ceres and sparked new excitement around cultural celebration in the region. For their outstanding initiative, cultural advocacy, and tireless commitment to bringing people together, this pair exemplifies the spirit of community leadership. Their contribution deserves to be honored with this recognition, as they have left a lasting and positive impact on the community they love.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR NOMINEES:

BIANCA DE LOS REYES Bianca is a HEFA mentor (higher education for all) where she mentors high school students, typically first generation or low-income students as they apply to college, meeting with them weekly to guide them and advise them as they apply to college. She encourages them to pursue education after high school and aids in the process. She also works for Young STEAMERS, an organization focused on providing STEM education to students from under sourced schools and low- income areas. Previously Young STEAMERS only had lessons provided in the Bay Area. Bianca worked to establish the very first young Steamers program here in the central valley and is working on establishing more within the 209 area. Bianca is an alumni of Ceres High school and a recent graduate of Stanford University class of 2025. When applying to college Ceres High had not had a previous graduate who had been accepted into Stanford University, she worked hard to make sure that she could be accepted into her dream school. In reflection she saw the value in education and in providing it to those who are in under sourced areas, one of those being the Ceres/Modesto Area. In her community service work, she aimed to close this gap between STEM education access and socioeconomic status as she once felt the struggles of growing up in a low income household. She graduated with a Bachelors of Science as a first generation college graduate and aims to continue working with programs that encourage other students to believe they can do the same, and give them the resources to do so. She is currently working at a Diabetes clinic in Modesto, serving patients in an attempt to better their health and wishes to continue to study medicine.

Coach Joe is more then a Coach, he is a mentor and has a positive impact on our Ceres youth organization and community. Coach Joe goes over and above for the children of Ceres, never expecting anything in return. Joe has done countless things for the youth in our community, with an open ear for advice, to purchasing clothing for the first day of school, giving rides, gas money to parents, he has done it all and he never talked about it, as it's done from his heart. Joe is always there for the under dog, the participants that needed him most, the children that have parents going through a divorce, failing a class in school, not choosing the best friends to hang out with, the parent that passed away and left to soon. Joe has always expressed that Acidemics over Athletes, you must be a good student, to be a good football player. Coach Joe was raised by a poor single mother and was taken and put into the foster system when he was 11 years old. Coach Joe understands these children need a positive influence and nurturing adult in there lives, as he didn't have an easy life himself. Coach Joe has been a roofer for the last 30 years and the work is hard and hot, but he always put the kids first and never misses practice. This year he had chest pains as he was working on a roof at a Manteca School. Little did Coach Joe know he had 5 blockages in his heart and he was about to have a massive heart attack, that could have killed him! Coach Joe had to have an emergency (cabage) quadruple heart by pass surgery, where veins were harvested from his leg and put in his heart. But Coach Joe never gave up and the day he was released from the Hosptial recovery and surgery, he went right to the field to see his football and cheer "kids", these kids are what keep him going! This is why we believe he is deserving of the Award, as giving back is what he does....whole heartedly.

YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR NOMINEES:

ALINA RAYA At fifteen, for most people, the world is a blur of classes and cafeteria food. But for Alina a freshman at a high school in Central Valley High School, life was a vibrant, meticulously organized tapestry of ambition and service. She didn't just walk the hallways; she moved with the focused energy of someone who knew exactly where she was going. Alina's deep-rooted commitment to her community wasn't new. For years, she had been a consistent volunteer, always seeking out ways to lend a hand. This history of giving back was the foundation for her current packed schedule. Her first major commitment this year was to the Future Farmers of America. Alina found a grounding satisfaction in the organization, a world away from the fast-paced life of her other activities. Her dedication and natural leadership qualities were quickly recognized, and she had just received the exciting news: she had been selected to participate in leadership conferences throughout the year. The thought of representing her chapter, learning new skills, and meeting other driven students filled her with enthusiasm. But the heart of her FFA involvement was a more personal commitment: a small, fluffy challenge. She was eagerly anticipating the opportunity to raise and exhibit a rabbit for the Stanislaus County Fair. She’d already started preparing her housing plans and reading up on breed standards, excited for the hands-on responsibility of nurturing an animal from kit to showstopper. You could find her on the sidelines wearing the proud colors of the Central Valley Seahawks as a dedicated cheerleader. Her role, however, extended far beyond the cheers and stunts. And yet, her service didn't end when the uniform came off. In her additional free time—time she magically seemed to conjure—Alina was deeply involved with the non-profit organization She Became. This was her space for quiet, focused volunteering and profound connection, a natural extension of her past community service. She spent hours assembling essential kits for girls, meticulously packing self-care items, including menstrual pads, and other personal hygiene supplies to ensure young women in need had access to dignity and comfort. Her biggest joy, though, was volunteering at the organization’s frequent girl empowerment rallies and volunteer opportunities, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other women and girls, helping to build a community of confidence and mutual support. Her freshman year was a demanding journey, a continuous balance of agricultural dedication, athletic spirit, academic rigor, and profound community service. But as Alina looked ahead—to the conferences, the fair, the next game, and the next kit assembly—she knew she wouldn't have it any other way. She was a freshman, yes, but she was also a leader, a cheerleader, a dedicated volunteer, and an unstoppable force, embracing every opportunity to grow and give back in her corner of the Central Valley High School. Experience and Skills Overview Service & Community Engagement Girl Scouts Cookie Sales: Participated in cookie sales in 2019 & 2021, developing sales and customer service skills. Virtual Workshop Instructor: Led online workshops in 2020 & 2021, teaching various skills and fostering teamwork. Community Service Salvation Army: Served meals at the Thanksgiving dinner, contributing to the community’s holiday celebrations. Modesto 4th of July Parade: Decorated parade floats and participated in the parade from 2019, 2023, 2024, 2025, including flyer distribution. Love Modesto Rally: Distributed flyers at a community table event to promote local engagement. Ceres Chamber of Commerce: Participated in the parade by distributing candy, engaging with the community and promoting local events. Administrative & Marketing Skills Office Administration: Gained experience in data entry, Canva design, CRM management, mailers, scanning, faxing, and emailing. Marketing: Created promotional videos and marketing materials for a realtor, enhancing their online presence. eaching, Leadership & Athletics Teaching & Leadership Cheer Instructor: Led cheer sessions for Little Hawks, encouraging teamwork and skill development. Digital Nest Member: Participated in Teen Tech programming, focusing on technology and innovation. Athletics Jiu Jitsu: Achieved gold and silver medals in competitions, showcasing dedication and athleticism. Receiving this award would not just be an accolade for Alina; it would be a huge recognition for her to continue to do the right thing and be the best for herself and her community. This award would serve as a powerful validation that her tremendous effort—balancing academics, agriculture, athletics, and social service—is seen and valued. It would act as a major motivator, reinforcing the belief that commitment and selfless service yield meaningful results, encouraging her to deepen her leadership roles within FFA and expand her crucial outreach efforts with She Became. For a young person, this recognition can be the critical moment that shapes a lifetime commitment to civic duty and excellence.
